Databases are a critical component of any internal developer platform. But as teams grow, they often encounter challenges managing databases at scale, resulting in costly downtime, operational inefficiencies, and reduced developer productivity. With Portworx Data Services, we’ve helped businesses like Rivian manage databases at scale, while providing developer self-service to databases provisioned within minutes – all while virtually eliminating database downtime.

In our latest release of Portworx Data Services, we’ve introduced:

  • Enhanced enterprise controls and security with granular RBAC, metadata tagging, and tighter integration with security capabilities in Portworx Enterprise
  • A new user interface for a more intuitive and user-friendly experience

As a quick note, we’ve also introduced new versioning for Portworx Data Services to better communicate to users when new capabilities are available. In this blog post, we describe the 24.07.01 release, which corresponds to the current year (2024), month (07), and the release number (01).

Enhanced enterprise controls, streamlined updates for greater security

Platform teams often have multiple internal (and sometimes external) stakeholders to satisfy, each with their own specific projects and needs. In Portworx Data Services, we’ve enabled more granular controls over teams, users, and databases, so our customers can better govern and optimize how services are deployed and managed across growing teams.

Expanded RBAC capabilities
To manage databases across a large organization, we’ve implemented RBAC and custom configurations at the account, project, cluster, and individual user levels; this expands on the existing user privilege controls within Portworx Data Services.

Streamlined security management through tighter integration with Portworx Enterprise
In working with thousands of customers, we’ve found that few businesses want to manage security and access controls across multiple solutions and layers throughout their stack. This is especially true with Kubernetes workloads, in which supporting infrastructure must be aware of the containerized application or service itself; teams running these workloads benefit from having a simpler operating model delivered through a consolidated solution.

Portworx is a container- and application-aware solution for Kubernetes storage and container data management, and Portworx Data Services deploys with Portworx Enterprise as the supporting Kubernetes storage layer. With our latest releases, databases provisioned and managed with Portworx Data Services are better secured on host by leveraging security features within Portworx Enterprise.

Expanded control for Kubernetes workloads with metadata tagging
Enterprise-grade control requires more than RBAC and authentication / authorization for users; it often extends to programmatic control over other objects and primitives. In Portworx Data Services, customers can now tag databases with arbitrary metadata, introducing another way to organize and manage Kubernetes workloads.

Increased security with faster availability and updates for databases
Keeping databases and services up-to-date is a best practice for enterprise security. However, the reality is that frequent updates – if not automated or streamlined – are also a maintenance headache for administrators handling infrastructure and databases at scale. Portworx Data Services helps our customers build and scale best operational practices for containerized databases in our catalog of databases, but with our latest release, we’re able to make updated images for databases available sooner to customers, and allow for automated updates to reduce both management overhead and risk.

Faster, more responsive user interface

Lastly (but not least), you might have noticed our new user interface! Overall, our new, lighter design and streamlined UX helps teams stay focused on critical, value-add work.
