Air-Gapped Installation
In some situations, edge sites are air-gapped. Portworx supports fully air-gapped deployments by mirroring container images and Helm charts into a private registry and pre-staging CRDs and operator bundles.
Topology-Aware Scheduling
STORK (Storage Orchestrator Runtime for Kubernetes) is Portworx’s custom scheduler extender that bridges storage-layer topology knowledge with Kubernetes scheduling decisions. At the edge, this ensures pods are placed on the node where their data replica lives, reducing cross-node I/O, which is critical when your networking links are constrained and latency-sensitive.
Designed for Low/No Connectivity
Each edge site in a Portworx deployment functions with high autonomy: all storage management operations run locally, minimizing dependencies on central data center or persistent cloud connectivity. Applications continue running and data remains protected even when the WAN link is down.
Live Migration at the Edge
Portworx supports KubeVirt live migration at edge sites, critical for planned maintenance (hardware servicing, firmware upgrades) where you can’t afford downtime. Mission-critical workloads migrate to the surviving worker node with no interruption.
Remote Observability via Pure1
The solution is designed for minimal on-site IT expertise — field technicians with basic training can perform break-fix. Telemetry sent to Pure1 facilitates remote troubleshooting and Portworx automatically uploads diagnostics to support (no manual intervention).
