Platform leaders are constantly balancing two critical needs: enforcing central storage policies for performance and resilience, while empowering developers with a fast, self-service, and Kubernetes-native experience. How do you deliver enterprise-grade storage capabilities without slowing down modern application development?

We’re excited to answer that challenge with the new integration between Portworx by Pure Storage and Pure Fusion. This powerful combination bridges the gap between the Fusion control plane and the Portworx data plane, seamlessly extending your organization’s storage policies directly into your Kubernetes environments.

Goodbye Manual Configuration: Discover Your Entire Pure Storage Fleet, Automatically

For platform teams, managing a fleet of storage arrays for Kubernetes often means tedious, error-prone manual configuration. In the past, administrators had to meticulously maintain pure.json secrets just to map arrays to their Portworx environment.

With the new integration, those days are over. The Portworx Fusion controller connects directly to the Fusion control plane, treating it as the single source of truth for your storage topology. It automatically discovers your entire fleet of FlashArray and FlashBlade devices, eliminating manual setup. When a new array is added or removed to the Fusion fleet, it instantly becomes available to your Kubernetes clusters. This simplifies ongoing maintenance and ensures your clusters always have an up-to-date view of available resources.

Effortless Governance: Bring Fusion Preset Policies Natively to Kubernetes

A core challenge has been translating high-level business requirements into concrete storage configurations that developers—particularly those who are accustomed to cloud-native development—can easily consume. Fusion solves this with presets—reusable templates where storage admins define policies for QoS, replication, and volume attributes.

The Portworx Fusion controller makes these presets directly and automatically available within Kubernetes as custom resources. For each preset, it generates a corresponding Kubernetes StorageClass. Developers can then provision storage by simply referencing the desired StorageClass in a standard PersistentVolumeClaim (PVC)—no need to understand the underlying infrastructure. For more complex needs, developers can use the Portworx Fusion Controller to provide custom inputs and create a Workload-based Kubernetes resource, which is then orchestrated into the required volumes using Pure Fusion.

This powerful automation ensures your organization’s storage policies are seamlessly extended and consistently applied within Kubernetes, without placing any extra burden on your development teams.

Intelligent and Optimal: Fusion Driven Placement for Every Kubernetes Volume

With an entire fleet of storage arrays at your disposal, how do you ensure each application gets placed on the optimal backend? The integration handles this intelligently and automatically.

When a developer requests storage, the Portworx Fusion Controller orchestrates with the Fusion placement service to determine the best possible location for that volume based on the policy requirements in the preset. Fusion’s control plane analyzes the entire fleet and returns a placement recommendation, which Portworx uses to create the volume on the designated array.

This workflow delivers true policy-driven placement, guaranteeing that every container volume is deployed optimally and in full compliance with its service level—all without the developer needing to know anything about the underlying storage infrastructure.

By bridging Fusion’s powerful storage policy management with the native Kubernetes workflow, the Portworx Fusion controller empowers platform teams to deliver a true, enterprise-grade data cloud for their modern applications.
