One of my favorite things to demo is creative ways to deal with data services in a Continuous Delivery pipeline. When we combine the workflows and automation with the declarative nature of Kubernetes, and add the ability to manage and migrate data with Portworx, we gain a powerful solution for testing data services as we make code changes.
I recently got my hands on Harness, which provides a platform to increase developer productivity, While I have only begun to scratch the surface, I recently leveraged it to add data integrity tests to a continuous delivery pipeline.
The below video shows how to run data inegrity tests in a larger CD pipeline using the Harness platform. In this video, I show how I am able to migrate the PVC of a Mongo database between two clusters, and run a simple test using a bash snippet to ensure that my data is there after performing an application change.
Harness has an extendible pipeline that bridges that gap between CI tools and GitOps platforms. During this demo I heavily leverage its ability to run arbitrary cli commands as part of a pipeline. This lets me easily monitor the Portworx CRDs on my cluster. Harness also has capabilities I plan to start leveraging soon: Harness can orchestrate git-based deployment solutions such as ArgoCD, and can run CI tasks in a container-based build farm.
