Mesosphere Enters into Reseller Agreement with Portworx to Accelerate Adoption of Containers and Fast Data Services at Scale

SAN FRANCISCOMarch 14, 2018 — Mesosphere, the most flexible platform for running data-intensive applications in containers, today announced that it has entered into a formal agreement to resell Portworx, the leading provider of cloud native storage for containerized applications. This agreement comes after the success of the two company’s previous collaboration to support joint customers running big data and fast data applications including Cassandra, Kafka, ElasticSearch, HDFS and more in production on Mesosphere DC/OS with Portworx PX-Enterprise.

Mesosphere and Portworx already have several joint customers including GE Digital, Verizon, NIOathenahealth, and Beco, Inc. Combining the flexibility of DC/OS with the PX-Enterprise cloud native data management platform, customers enable high availability, snapshots, backup, encryption and dynamic scheduling of data services at scale. With this agreement, Mesosphere is providing its customers with a best-in-class solution for running scalable, high-performance, data-rich applications in production. PX-Enterprise supports both Marathon and Kubernetes container orchestrators, allowing Mesosphere customers the choice to manage their mission-critical stateful applications using either technology via DC/OS.

“Our global business is building autonomous vehicles, which requires every component, hardware and software, to be fail-safe,” said Ganesh V. Iyer, CIO and head of global digital operations at NIO. “Our computing infrastructure needs to dynamically scale to huge numbers of containers while maintaining the highest levels of performance. With Mesosphere DC/OS automating compute and Portworx automating storage, it is really easy for us to manage our stateful workloads, even at enormous scale.”

“At the scale we are operating, handling stateful services in a reliable, scalable fashion is difficult,” said Jeffrey Zampieron, CTO at Beco Inc. “Our solution is to run a containerized microservices infrastructure that is orchestrated using Mesosphere DC/OS. By leveraging Portworx, we gain a cloud native storage solution that allows us to abstract away storage hardware so we can focus on automated operations of our data services. Portworx and Mesosphere together provide an easy to deploy, easy to operate and easy to scale persistent storage solution for stateful containers.”

With the focus on hybrid, edge and multi-cloud deployments in the 1.11 release of  DC/OS, Portworx is a particularly good solution for DC/OS customers. Using Portworx with Mesosphere DC/OS running Marathon or Kubernetes, customers can have true portability of applications between environments. For instance, with Mesosphere and Portworx:

  • Stateful applications like Cassandra, Kafka, ElasticSearch, HDFS and more can be deployed across fault-domains, ensuring that if a server, rack, datacenter or even region is down, an application can keep running or be rescheduled to another host with an up-to-date copy of the data available.
  • Big data, fast data, and machine learning workloads like TensorFlow can be burst to the cloud using Portworx CloudSnap feature which moves data between environments so that DC/OS can schedule compute jobs on demand.
  • DC/OS Kubernetes-as-a-service users can take advantage of Portworx’s forced hyperconvergence of compute with data to ensure that their mission-critical, performance sensitive data services always run with fast local storage, even when being rescheduled due to a server or network failure.

“Mesosphere DC/OS is the leading platform for implementing containers and fast data services at scale,” said Florian Leibert, co-founder and CEO, Mesosphere. “Portworx PX-Enterprise is the leading cloud native storage offering in the market for container-based applications, making it an ideal fit for DC/OS. We’re thrilled to formalize the relationship and further enable containerized and fast data applications with portability and ease.”

“Some of Portworx’s largest customers have chosen Mesosphere DC/OS as their container platform of choice for running mission critical, data-intensive applications at scale,” said Murli Thirumale, co-founder and CEO, Portworx. “Mesosphere customers now have built-in access to PX-Enterprise as the cloud native storage for their containerized applications, giving them performance and reliability at the data layer with DevOps ready automation and flexibility.”

Mesosphere is leading the enterprise transformation toward distributed computing and hybrid cloud. Mesosphere DC/OS is the premier platform for building, deploying, and elastically scaling modern applications and big data. DC/OS makes running containers, data services, and microservices easy across your own hardware and cloud instances. Mesosphere was founded in 2013 by the architects of hyperscale infrastructures at Airbnb and Twitter and the co-creator of Apache Mesos. Mesosphere is headquartered in San Francisco with additional offices in New York CityHamburg, Germany; and Beijing. Mesosphere investors include Andreessen Horowitz, Hewlett Packard Enterprise, Khosla Ventures, Kleiner Perkins Caufield & Byers, and Microsoft.

About Portworx
Portworx is the solution for stateful containers in production, designed with DevOps in mind. With Portworx, customers can manage any database or stateful service on any infrastructure using any container scheduler, including KubernetesMesosphere DC/OS, and Docker Swarm. Portworx solves the five most common problems DevOps teams encounter when running stateful services in production: persistence, high availability, data automation, security, and support for multiple data stores and infrastructure. Portworx is ideally suited for solution verticals such as databases, messaging queues, continuous integration and continuous deployment (CICD), big data and content management. Customers include Lufthansa Systems, TGen, fifteen companies in the Fortune Global 1000 and federal agencies, and other Fortune 1000 customers in healthcare, global manufacturing, and telecom.
